I’ve read a couple blogs - MAHA and the Old MD Girl - that have reflected back on the last ten years of their lives. As I read through their trials and tribulations, I thought about all that I’ve done in the past ten years and thought maybe I would give this a try as well. So here goes….
- 2000 – graduated high school and moved to Tucson, Arizona. I worked as a telemarketer for a timeshare resort for the first few months – hated it! I then started working as a customer service representative for a call center that was a vender for GE, now Verizon(These two jobs could be the main reason I don’t call people as often as I should….) I started my first semester of community college while working full time. After a few months of taking phone calls, I moved up to an RTA analyst, basically I monitored all the people on the phones making sure they were taking calls in a timely manner, not keeping the customer on hold for too long and making sure the calls were coming in.
– I moved from RTA analyst to RTA Helpdesk. This was a newly created department and we were in charge of handling outages. Anytime the phones/computers went down we would page everyone that needed to know and report the status every half hour. Somewhere in all this I got engaged and six months later we broke up and I moved out into my own, very first apartment. It was pretty cute, too. I then moved from this position into ITS as a computer technician. I really enjoyed this job and learned a lot from the awesome guys I worked with. I was still taking classes at PCC and working full time. My goal was to get my associates, transfer to University of Arizona and then get my bachelors and apply to law school. I found out that PCC offered a paralegal degree so I figured this would be a good way to go for me.
- 2003 - Soon after moving out into my own apartment, I met my first husband and six months later we were married. Yes, not very smart, but oh well - I learned a lot from this marriage. I continued pursuing my degree while working full time, but I started taking some crime scene management courses on the weekends and really enjoyed them. I even thought about joining the FBI, but I was still too young and needed a bachelor’s degree.
– My last semester at PCC I started an internship at the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. I was basically in charge of retrieving a looooong list of documents that was needed for an upcoming trial. It may have been some boring copy work, but the case was very interesting and it earned me an award for being part of the team. I was very honored considering I was just a little intern.
– I finally finished my degree at PCC and applied for a position at the AG’s office as a paralegal working in the forfeiture area. I was hired on and quite my job as a IT technician. During this time I separated from my husband and moved into my own apartment. It was a time of new beginnings for me. I continued my education and started taking classes, mainly on-line, at Northern Arizona University. My degree was in criminal justice. I soon realized that my classes were limited so I decided to transfer to the UofA. I was still debating on going to law school, but was also tossing the idea of medical school around. I really enjoyed my psychology classes and was considering pursuing a degree in that and maybe go on to be a psychiatrist, but the FBI still had my interest and I decided that was my goal. I met with a few agents that gave me some great advice and information about the FBI and I finally figured out what I was going to do with my life…. Or so I thought.
– During the summer of 2006, I reconnected with Brad, as he was traveling through Tucson. We hit it off and a relationship blossomed into something serious, and a long distance relationship wasn’t going to be possible, so I decided that I would move to Kansas. I researched the local universities and found that I could still get my psychology degree there and apply for the FBI. The first few months I rode in the truck with Brad and loved it. I really didn’t want to find a job and start school, but knew that wasn’t an option. Over Christmas Brad proposed!
– I started working at a local law firm as a transcriptionist. A pretty far cry from a paralegal, but I couldn’t find anything that would work with my schedule and they said they would be flexible, until I started school. They decided that they were not going to let me leave a half hour early so I could attend a class in Wichita – a 45 min drive from where I live, so I had arrived late to class. In one of my other classes, I overheard someone talking and say they needed an assistant and I jumped at the opportunity, and was hired on as an office assistant! Just my luck!
– I decided that the FBI would not be good for family life and I was going to go into the forensic science field. The more chemistry and biology classes I took, the more I decided that I wanted to go to medical school. Brad and I got married in June! :o)
– I began taking classes to apply to medical school, started shadowing different doctors to get a good idea of what different specialties do and continued working full time. Brad and I decided that since we don’t really have any mementoes of our wedding day because we didn’t have a wedding, we were going to have a little ceremony so my dad could walk me down the aisle and we could have our pictures and memories. We plan to have it summer of 2010. I plan to take the dreaded MCAT in May of 2010 and apply to medical school July 1 of 2010. This was the year of my first high school reunion. I didn’t go, this time, but maybe next time. We’ll see.
So this was the last ten years of my life in a nutshell. Hope you enjoyed the cliff notes version! :o)
